DUNCARSE HOUSE, DUNDEE.

The client’s brief was simple in that they wanted the run-down ex-Jute Baron mansion to be turned into a family home but it was to have the feel and decor of a bespoke hotel.

We took the decision to preserve and repair most of the plasterwork and facings inside the house and maintain the window patterns, especially the orangery entrance. The client’s own access to ideas and equipment worked alongside the detailing and feature pieces of joinery work we incorporated.

Scale was considered vital both from size and volume of rooms as well as the furniture and fittings to go inside those rooms. Strong colour was used to make a statement with feature walls which helped the brief compliance by giving reference to its use as a family home. We did not want the house to have the feel of a museum with children in it. The client entertains guests and wanted the house to feel warm and intimate at times. We helped coordinate the lighting specialist and the end result pleases the client immensely.
